Sun Valley Source For Sports will donate the proceeds from each and every skate sharpening that day to the Shoot For A Cure charity, which aims to prevent, and eventually cure, spinal cord injury.
“The hockey season is back in full swing and this Saturday is a big skate sharpening day for us. We hope to support the cause substantially and are calling on the community to chip in,” said Sun Valley owner Mike Melbourne.
Sun Valley will join 145 other Source For Sports stores across Canada also participating in the fundraising effort. It is estimated that as many as 10,000 skates will be sharpened.
For his store’s part, Melbourne hopes that Sun Valley will hold its own.
“We’re hoping to do 100. That would be a good Saturday.”
He added that Shoot For A Cure’s focus on hockey injuries makes it especially relevant to the sport store.
“Shoot For The Cure is specifically aimed at hockey injuries so it’s our cause and it’s our charity.”
Those visiting the store can also enter a draw for a chance to win a trip for five and the last team spot in the second annual Source For Sports Canadian National Pond Hockey Championships in Huntsville, Ont., in January.
“Source For Sports is our largest donor and a key to making our work possible,” said Barry Munro, president of the Canadian Spinal Research Organization, in a press release. “This new initiative just strengthens our relationship.”
