Theres new hope for patients with spinal cord injuries, thanks to a unique program at Ohio State University Medical Center. The NeuroRecovery Network (NRN) Center at Dodd Hall Rehabilitation Services is one of just seven centers across the country funded by the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The NRN is a network of leading rehabilitation centers whose staffs have been trained in intensive, activity-based treatments for patients with incomplete spinal cord injuries. This is a whole new initiative in treating people with spinal cord injuries, says Michele Basso, EdD, director of Ohio States NeuroRecovery Network and associate professor in OSUs School of Allied Medical Professions. Its a perfect example of basic science being translated into clinical applications that can change lives.
Jerry Mysiw, MD, a physician in physical medicine at Dodd Hall, says spinal cord injuries are devastating and affect every aspect of a patients life. Their social, personal and physical activities and interactions all are impacted by these injuries, said Mysiw. We hope this groundbreaking work will open a new chapter of therapy and treatment for people with this type of impairment.
Participants in the OSU program receive therapy several times a week for an extended period of time. Results can range from lessened pain, enhanced balance, better respiratory and heart health, and in some cases, the ability to walk. The overall goal is to see an improved quality of life for participants.
Every patient weve had so far has made measurable progress, says Robert Vanecko, director of Inpatient Rehabilitation. We are meeting the mission of the University and the Medical Center in the areas of patient care, education and a focus on new technologies that improve the quality of our patients lives.
