German social court rules ReWalk exoskeleton medically necessary for patient with SCI

ReWalk Robotics logoReWalk Robotics announced the first ruling by the Social Welfare Court of Speyer which declared the ReWalk exoskeleton system was medically necessary and should be covered by insurance for a patient with spinal cord injury. The ruling, delivered in late July, overturns the original denial of the claim by the payer, a statutory health insurance entity, according to a press release.

The claimant, Philip Hollinger, is a 44-year-old man who sustained a spinal cord injury in a car accident in 2006. The accident left him paralyzed with a T6 level injury.

paraplegic-man-races-on-mechanical-legsDenny Ross – paralyzed from the chest down in a car accident – has gone from counting his steps to counting kilometres, attempting to finish a five kilometre race with the use of a ReWalk exoskeleton on Saturday.

“It’s a huge step,” he said with a laugh while taking part in the N.E.R.D. Run at William Hawrelak Park, an annual fundraiser supporting the University of Alberta’s Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute.

Ross has been using the exoskeleton as part of a pilot study examining the effects of using the ReWalk device, purchased by the Spinal Cord Injury Treatment Society in 2014 and leased to the university for the trial.

Kessler Foundation Expands Robotic Research in Spinal Cord Injury

Kessler Foundation has expanded its research in exoskeletal-assisted standing and walking with the addition of ReWalk, the robotic exoskeleton from ReWalk Robotics. The Foundation has been conducting exoskeletal research since October 2011, according to Gail Forrest, PT, PhD, assistant director of Human Performance & Engineering Research.
