Yes, Nick Buoniconti was a famous football player. He was a member of the Miami Dolphins’ “Perfect Season” and Super Bowl championship teams. He was known for playing middle linebacker with a passion, tracking down quarterbacks like a heat-seeking missile.
He was an integral part of the Dolphins’ glory years.
But as Buoniconti’s legacy is reassessed following his death on Tuesday, it’s pretty much unanimous that it’s what he did after he left the field — and a horrific family tragedy — that truly meant the most to so many South Floridians.

NEW YORK, May 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — United Spinal Association and The Buoniconti Fund today announced their plans to create a coordinated national network of peer support groups called the “Spinal Network” that will set higher standards in assisting people living with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D).
The goal of the Spinal Network is to ensure more peer support groups in cities and towns across the United States are connected to the very best resources to help people with SCI/D maintain independent and active lifestyles.

The Buoniconti Fund and National Spinal Cord Injury Association (NSCIA), intend to jointly implement a coordinated national network of local support groups called the Spinal Network. Together, the Spinal Network will establish consistent standards for local groups wishing to provide support for the people living with Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI/D), with an emphasis upon groups that promote independence and active lifestyle community integration.
