Patient necessity in southeast US affects innovative center

SANFORD, FL – A promising new resource with a proven methodology of recovery is now available for spinal cord injury persons living throughout the southeastern United States. Step It Up Recovery Center, Inc. in Sanford, Florida is now accepting clients for an innovative, exercise-based program modeled after the successful Project Walk® Spinal Cord Injury Recovery program in Carlsbad, CA.

“Step It Up Recovery Center, Inc. has been established to help those living with a spinal cord injury (SCI) improve their daily living – and perhaps ultimately walk again – through a proven, specialized and comprehensive exercise-based program,” according to Liza Perla-Riedel, founder of Step It Up Recovery Center, Inc., one of eight certified Project Walk® provider facilities in the world.

Those living in the southeast who are interested in pursuing avenues of recovery from SCI previously only had the option of attending centers far from home. For many, relocation in search of recovery is not an option, which is why Step It Up Recovery Center was born—to provide a much needed and desired program locally.

The center will utilize The Dardzinski Method™ of spinal cord injury recovery, an innovative, aggressive exercise-based recovery program where highly skilled Specialists stimulate and facilitate reorganization of the nervous system thus allowing the client to regain function to their potential and perhaps to walk again. This method has been validated by research and a study was recently published in the journal, Spinal Cord. According to Perla-Riedel, “Health insurance and standard physical therapy only provide clients with the necessities to ‘live’ in a wheelchair and most SCI clients are not eligible for continued physical therapy due to cutbacks in state funding. They are left with little hope for the future.” Step It Up Recovery Center can make a difference. “It is a going to be a place with support, education and encouragement. A place where quality of life increases, where hope lives and where dreams can come true,” says Perla-Reidel.

Step It Up Recovery Center, Inc. was established in 2008 by Liza Perla-Riedel after an April 2007 car accident involving her 17-year-old-daughter, Amanda. Amanda suffered a C6-C7 spinal cord injury after the driver of the car she was riding in fell asleep. Through research and networking, the family was directed to Project Walk® in Carlsbad, CA where Amanda made progress that was previously unthinkable.

Step It Up Recovery Center, Inc. is a nonprofit organization located at 508 Central Park Drive Sanford, Florida 32771. For more information or to make a tax-deductible donation, please call (321) 972-3789 or visit www.stepituprecovery.org.
