Rick Hansen’s 25th anniversary tour ends in Vancouver

Rick Hansen wrapped up the 25th anniversary of his Man in Motion tour when he rolled up for a special ceremony at BC Place in Vancouver at noon on Tuesday.

The celebration concluded his nine-month cross-Canada anniversary tour at the same place he concluded his gruelling round-the-world wheelchair tour 25 years ago.

When the then-29-year-old athlete from Port Alberni, B.C., completed his journey in 1987, 26 months after he had launched his Man in Motion marathon, he had raised $26 million for research into spinal cord injuries.

The foundation that bears his name has since raised $250 million and continues to focus attention on the need for more advances to improve the lives of those with spinal injuries.

The noon event at the Terry Fox Plaza outside BC Place will be followed with a special concert beginning at 7 p.m. PT at the Pacific Coliseum.
