Duke student mentors others with disabilities

The Indianapolis native planned to attend Duke University in the fall of 2011 on a full merit scholarship, and hoped one day to be a politician.

ronheagy_184ALBANY, Ore. — Ron Heagy Jr. of Millersburg, Ore., used to think he had problems.

He was 17, 6-foot-2, and could bench-press 300 pounds. He was going to be a fullback for Oregon State University. He had plans for spring break that didn’t include dragging his little brother along on a surfing trip.

But here he was, stuck with a 13-year-old, so mad he shrugged off his mother’s request for a hug goodbye.

Following devastating crash, Kyle Lamey recovers abilities step at a time

Kyle LameyWhen Kyle Lamey broke four vertebrae in a car accident, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down, he was told he would likely never be able to breathe without a ventilator.

Three years later, Lamey is not only breathing on his own, but he’s able to move his upper body and arms, and drive a car.

Murray Blackmore stood at the lectern and tried to take in the dark conference room, the men and women in wheelchairs waiting for him to wrest a little hope from science. But in his preoccupied state, the room was a blur and hope a struggle.The 39-year-old researcher took a deep breath.

An assistant professor at Marquette University, Blackmore had looked forward to addressing the symposium on spinal cord research in Boston. Work filled his daylight hours; interrupted his dreams at night. Often he would wake at 2 or 3 in the morning, pitched from sleep into the scientific puzzles of a broken spinal cord.
