Rick Hansen personally thanks Quinte West volunteers

At a recent reception in Toronto, Rick Hansen personally spent time with community representatives from across Ontario who have joined the Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion volunteer team. Mr. Hansen was pleased to congratulate the event leaders, committee members and the spokespeople with spinal cord injury (SCI) who have teamed up in support of their local event.

In the second year of Mr. Hansen’s national fund-raising project, Ontario has seen a significant growth in the number of Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion events throughout the province; there will be over 70 events in Ontario and close to 200 across Canada. Scotiabank is the presenting partner. Each event is created to raise funds for a Cure and for the Community. Fifty per cent of the net funds raised will be directed to research and the other half will be directed back into event communities such as Quinte West for a priority project to improve the quality of life for people living with spinal cord injury; last year some of the projects included rendering a park accessible, making a van accessible, more accessible transportation. The Quinte West event is hosted by the City of Quinte West. It is sure to be a great day.

Mr. Hansen took this opportunity to thank and congratulate all of the volunteers present. He spent a few quality moments with committee members Jaclyn McSwiggan and Shawna Rolfe.

Rick Hansen, the team of volunteers and Scotiabank invite people of all ages and abilities from Quinte West to get on their bikes, in line skates, wheelchairs, scooters or walk, run or jog to raise money through pledges and donations. Jaclyn McSwiggan, the event leader says: “We have a fabulous event planned and are very excited about contributing to our community and to raise awareness for spinal cord injury. The event is targeting families; there will be a kids activity area, entertainment and many goodies. The funds being directed back to our community will help so many people in Quinte West with SCI as well as others with physical disabilities.”

Mr. Hansen encouraged all his volunteers to keep up the good work and the momentum as their efforts will contribute to his dream of one day seeing the wheelchair in a museum.
